Volkswagen DSG Recall - Are You Affected?

According to this Honest John Article, Volkswagen are set to be hit with massive recall costs due to problems with their famous DSG gearbox.
"384,181 vehicles were recalled to replace defective gearboxes that may result in the loss of acceleration.

Models include the Golf, Magotan, Sagitar and Audi A3"
The cost to Volkswagen is initially estimated to be $600 million, not exactly change you find at the back of the sofa!

This could spell an end of people's affection for the German brand and may see consumer's look east when purchasing their next car considering the increased warranties and impressive reliability ratings associated with Korean and Japanese manufacturers.

Let us know if you are affected and if it will change your opinion of Volkswagen?

  1. Just driven my brand new Tiguan 2litre DSG. Fine until I tried toreverse it up my drive which has a considerable slope.Car will not engage the accelerator until the elctronic handbrake or autohold is released BUT this engagement has ashort delay from when you release the brake. Resultsin the car rolling forward even when in reverse gear!!I have spent hourslooking this up on the internet and it appears that the DSG 'automatic' box does not operate in the same way as the older automatic boxes. In the older automatics if the car was in reverse gear, it was just that - in gear. With he DSG, even if the car is in put into reverse gear, it will actually be in Neutral as long as any braking system is on. When the bake is released and accelelorator is applied there is a delay while the gearbox moves from neutral into gear. Result - the car runs forwards down the incline. This is a very dangerous situation. How on earth has this set up passed safety tests and been allowed. I am not goingto keep thgis car as I consider any car that is completekly out of control for just a few seconds to be absolutely lethal!!In the BMW there is a delay before the break releases after you touch the accelerator and therefore the problem doesn't arise.

  2. The Japanese beat them on just about every count. VWs gained a reputation for reliability, but this was largely due to clever advertisement. Read any consumer survey (JD Power or similar), and Honda or Toyota always beat them.
