WARNING! Weather Of Biblical Proportions Is About To Happen....Maybe

We're mad keen for a good (bad) weather warning here in Ireland aren't we? We love it!
Then, when the aforementioned weather of biblical proportions never happens and turns out to be little more than a storm in a teacup we love a good moan about the fact that it never happened and how the forecasters never get it right. As a nation we also really hate the snow don't we and we reeeally really love a good moan if it actually does snow!
Personally I find it all a bit odd, because I love the snow. It reminds me of when I was kid, sledging, building snowmen and having snowball fights. Even as a wee youngster the quiet, soft edged beauty of  a snow covered landscape wasn't lost on me and it's still something I find mesmerizing today. I'll never forget the expressions on my kids young faces the first time they saw snow, the little lad literally almost shat himself with excitement!...and i'm with him, it is something to be excited about.
Anyway enough of that rose tinted nonsense, back to the moaning.

Right now there's a Status Yellow snow and ice weather warning from Met Eireann for the whole of the country. We're in for about 3 centimeters, apparently "all areas are at risk" but fear not, the warning is only valid until 11pm on Thursday. I wonder what happens if it does snow and it's still around at 11.15pm on Thursday? Are we allowed to moan that there was no valid weather warning?
Anyhoo, it's all immaterial. Weather warning or not, if it does snow the entire country is going to come to a grinding halt and those of us who enjoy the benefits of life in the Capitol in particular will be enjoying the interior of our cars, whilst we're stuck, bumper to bumper for hours on end panicking that we're going to run out of fuel, so we have that to look forward to!

Final point, and this blog was genuinely never meant to be a sales pitch, I just fancied having a rant about the weather - if you live in a remote area or have steep hills to navigate and it does actually snow, it might be worth your while checking out our snow socks. They really really do work amazingly well and we're the best price anywhere online or in-store.

But more importantly, embrace the snow people! build a snowman, fall off a sledge, fire a snowball at your mate and remember what it was like to be a kid again for just a few moments :)

Winter Driving - Everything you Need to Know

This article contains all you need to be well prepared for the roads this Winter. You will find details on what checks you need to do, what  essentials you should have in your boot and how to drive safely on snow and ice.

Preparing your car for the Winter months
  • Make sure your tyres are up to it, the more thread the better
  • Correct pressure in your tyres
  • Snow Socks can make life a lot easier
Firstly, ensure that your tyres are in roadworthy condition. While the minimum legal thread depth is 1.6mm we recommend not letting it get this low. Your tyres should have the correct pressure to give you the best chance of remaining safe while driving, this can be found in the owner's handbook. Winter tyres are incredibly useful if there is sustained snowfall but are also an expensive investment considering the sporadic weather. A more affordable way of increasing your grip on snowy roads is by using snow socks, these can be a life-saver during heavy downfall, especially for unsure drivers.

  • Wiper motor and blades in full working order
  • Wiper blades not perished or damaged
Your windscreen wipers are crucial to your safety during the Winter. Visibility is your number one priority, you don't want snow resting on your windscreen while driving! Make sure that your wiper blades aren't perished, it is a relatively cheap fix that will see you right through the harsh weather.

Lights
  • Lights on at all times
  • All bulbs working as normal
As you will be driving with your lights on at all times you will need them to be in full working order. Bulbs can be replaced by yourself within minutes and will make a remarkable difference both during the day and at night. It also helps your car be noticed by other motorists during the bleak conditions.

Fluid Levels
  • Anti-freeze windscreen wash
  • Check oil, battery, brake and power steering fluid and coolant
Your last bit of maintenance before the possibility of snow and ice increases is to top up your levels! Anti-freeze windscreen wash is a godsend, it will reduce the chance of ice forming on your windscreen as you drive and will also keep your view clear. You should also check the other areas such as oil, battery, brake and power steering fluid and coolant.

Winter Essentials to Have in your Boot
  • Have an Ice Scraper close to hand
  • De-Icer and Gloves will make the job easier
There are some items to purchase that are going to make the Winter far easier for yourself and your occupants. The first thing that happens in the morning will be to scrape the snow and ice from your windscreen, windows and mirrors. It helps if you have gloves to hold the Ice Scraper, De-Icer will make the job far easier also.

  • Snow Shovel can come in handy to remove packed snow
  • Old carpet under drive wheels will help increase traction if you become stuck
If you do get in a spot of bother then you need to get out and get digging sometimes! A snow shovel is ideal for this, old carpet is also particularly handy to place under the drive wheels to increase traction.

  • Use a Hi-Vis Vest to make yourself more visible to other motorists
  • Place a warning triangle some distance behind your car if you are stuck/broken down
A Hi-Vis Vest and a Warning Triangle are essential if you are stepping out of the car for an extended time, it will give other motorists longer to react if you are stranded in the middle of a road. Be careful when outside as other vehicles will take longer to stop and have reduced visibility, injuries also increase from people losing their footing and falling so tread carefully.

  • A torch is a vital piece of your Winter Kit, spare batteries are also useful
A torch with spare batteries should be part of your Winter Kit as there is a lack of sunlight as we are all well aware.

Warm Jacket & Blanket
  • If you need to keep warm while waiting for assistance then an old heavy, warm jacket is a must
If you unfortunately do breakdown or become stuck and are waiting for help then you will need a jacket. Pack an old warm heavy jacket in your boot and leave it there, you may be glad of it some day, and while you're at it a blanket as well, in case you have any back seat passengers who may also need to be kept warm and cosy!

How to Drive in Snow and Ice
Your Route
  • Only drive if you must
  • Stick to the main roads where possible
First off, only undertake your journey if it is necessary. If possible, stick to major roads which are going to be in better condition and will have been salted most likely.

Give Yourself Time
  • Leave early and take your time
  • Remember to leave more distance than usual between yourself and other vehicles
Allow yourself more time and drive slower than usual. Increase the gap between you and the car ahead for obvious reasons.

Keep Your Cool
  • Avoid doing anything rapidly. Steering movements, acceleration and braking should be done smoothly
Drive smoothly, avoid harsh acceleration or braking, this will make the whole thing far easier for you. Brake on the straights, you should not have to brake during a corner. Adjusting the steering should also be done in a considered and delicate manner, wildly turning the steering wheel will cause the wheels to lose traction.

If you Skid
  • Keep cool, reduce acceleration and gently brake. Steer in your intended direction
If you do lose traction and find yourself skidding then try not to worry, we know this is tough but it is the best approach. Reduce acceleration and gently brake, avoid slamming on the brake pedal which is the natural reaction. Steer in the direction of the skid, correcting the car gradually.

If you find that you need any of the items mentioned above then you can find them in our Winter Driving section. Safe Driving!

My Work Experience Week in MicksGarage.com

Hi I'm Sean, a Transition Year Student from Rockbrook Park School. This week I have been doing work experience at MicksGarage.

logo

Monday: On Monday morning, and every other morning that week, I was over forty minutes early. The day doesn't start till 9a.m, the latest my dad could get me there was 8:20a.m. I waited in the customer service department every morning till I was told where to go. I wasn’t ever board in the morning while waiting because everyone that was there was fun to be around.
I spent the whole day working in the warehouse which was freezing cold. I was brought there by my god father Derick who works in I.T, he introduced me to elvir who showed me around the warehouse, introduced me to a few people and then gave me jobs to do. One of the jobs was packaging orders. It took a few tries to get it right, thankfully the guys there were patient with me.

Tuesday: I spent the day again working in the warehouse, it was a bit warmer yet was still pretty cold. At the start of the day I was showed and helped out with many of the different jobs there, for example gathering together orders, packaging them and preparing them for postage.

Wednesday: I spent Wednesday working in marketing. Like the warehouse everyone had something to do and were always busy but seemed pretty relaxed. First I helped gather information for Haynes books that were being added to the website. After that I was shown how they advertise the website and all to other components involved in selling the products online.

Thursday: Again I was working in marketing, I was asked to do many different things, compare prices, make a spreadsheet with the locations of particular products on it and then to finish the day, checking the search results of car lights on carlampsdirect.com

Friday: This was my final day working at MicksGarage, I spend the morning creating bundles that were immediately updated to the website. Once I finished that, I started this essay!

I’m going to miss working at MicksGarage. I learnt alot about how a company like MicksGarage works, every one there was kind and didn’t mind showing me how to do something. Thanks to every one there for making this a fun week

Smith wins again from pole in Snetterton

Chrome Edition Restart Racing’s Árón Smith was fresh with confidence after the championship’s six week summer break. Looking to return to the podium again after a disappointing weekend at Croft, the Oulton Park race winner was hoping that Snetterton would reward his efforts as it did in 2013.

Despite a mixed set of free practice sessions on Saturday morning, qualifying came together for the Irishman as the rain just held off for the session. Qualifying his MicksGarage.com supported machine in seventh, this put Smith in an ideal position to move into the podium mix early in the race.

Glorious sunshine set the scene for round 16 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at noon. An eventful opening race to the weekend where Árón was initially running as high as fourth eventually resulted in a sixth place finish at the line.

Starting from the outside of row three for race two, the Safety Car was deployed for the first four laps just after the start as contact between Adam Morgan and Alain Menu left the Swiss driver’s Passat CC on the track and in need of recovery. When racing got back underway, Árón made the most of his restart to challenge Fabrizio Giovanardi for seventh position. Despite a clean and fair battle, Smith was unable to find a way past the Italian and brought his Restart Energy Drinks Volkswagen Passat CC across the line in eighth place.

However race three would be the highlight of Árón’s weekend. Benefitting from a reverse grid draw for the second time this season, Árón found himself on pole position for the final race of the weekend. Converting pole to a race victory in Oulton Park, Smith pulled up to the front of the grid looking typically cool and collected, knowing a clean start was going to be key in securing a repeat performance. With a brace of Motorbase Ford Focus’s around him, Smith did indeed make a good getaway but was under some heavy scrutiny from Giovanardi during the opening laps of the race. As the Motorbase pair started their own battle, Árón opened up a slender advantage in front but approaching the closing stages of the race, Mat Jackson was now starting to look for a way past the Team BMR driver. Smith, who looked very comfortable in his Passat all weekend, performed a master class in defending his lead while at the same time trying to conserve his tyres. A dive coming into the last corner on the penultimate lap was Jackson’s final attempt to take the lead before Árón managed to secure his advantage over the final lap to take the chequered flag and secure his third British Touring Car Championship career victory and the second for Warren Scott’s Team BMR.

Árón Smith - #40 Restart Racing Volkswagen Passat CC:
“I have never won in the dry in the BTCC so this win was a sweet one and I now feel I can conquer it all! Both Motorbase cars kept me honest and I tried to keep as much distance between us as possible. The team made it happen. I had a bit of an off earlier in the week testing and they turned it around and into a race winner - no other team could have done that.”

Father's Day Supercar Competition

Back in June we launched our Fathers Day Supercar driving competition through JOE.ie and our Facebook page. We had loads of entries and understandably so, the prize was awesome! The winner would get the chance to tear around Mondello Park, Ireland's premier racetrack with Arón Smith, professional British Touring Car driver in a selection of high performance machinery including a Porsche 911 and full-on Lola racing car.

We picked a winner from the virtual hat of randomness and Declan Reamonn from Wexford came up trumps! The date was set for July 18th and we all waited impatiently!

The 18th arrived quickly enough and myself, Rob our cameraman and our tame racing driver, Aron met up with Declan and his wife Gina in the Johnstown inn in Naas (which is highly recommended by the way) for quick bite to eat before heading over to Mondello.
Dec had sprung the news just half an hour previously that he would be handing over his prize to his wife, who was an even bigger petrol-head than himself! The nerves had clearly set in but both were buzzing with excitement which was great to see.

When we got to Mondello the 3 gleaming cars Gina would be driving were all lined up and ready to go. We headed up to the suites above pitlane for a one-on-one briefing session with Aron but something was going on because both Gina & Declan were getting briefed.

Sure enough, 2 crash helmets appeared..... Turns out a space in Mondello's schedule had free'd up and they were going to get both Gina and Declan out on track! Fair play guys, you're absolute legends!! :)

First up was the Mazda 3 training car, completely stripped and decked out with bucket seats, racing harnesses and a full roll cage. What the little hatchback lacks in outright power, it more than makes up for in handling.
 Grin-Factor: Off the scale!

Next up was the Boxster and the 911. With more than 3 times the power of the Mazda, the Porsche's really got the adrenalin pumping and there were some shaky hands and sweaty palms when the pair stepped out after their laps!
The times tumbled under the expert guidance of their instructor, culminating in a highly respectable 1:12.6, a full 10 seconds quicker than the 1st lap!
After the Porsche's it was time for the pro to take over! We strapped Dec into the passenger seat of the race prepared MX5, The revs rose and Aron dumped the clutch leaving 2 thick black lines of rubber down pitlane as he headed out on track for some Hot Laps. Watching from the sidelines it was clear he wasn't messing about, he was trying pretty hard! The pasty face and nervous laughter from Declan certainly backed that up when the pair returned to the pits!

The last car we had lined up for the guys was in a different league altogether in terms of performance. The Lola (above) is a proper racing car. It has a 300bhp race prepared engine, 6 speed sequential gearbox, racing brakes, slick tyres and bodywork that produces downforce....in short it's bloody fast! Couple that with a world class driver and you're in for something a bit special.
As the Lola accelerated out of pitlane the difference in speed was immediately apparent and in just a few hundred yards they were up to 6th gear and really shifting. I got a couple of laps in the car myself and apart from the outright speed and Aron's car control it's the way that the Lola pulls just as hard in 6th as it does in 2nd or 3rd that really impresses. To put it in perspective, the Lola lapped the track a full 15 seconds faster than the 911 and 911's aren't slow!

I think I can safely speak for everyone and say a fantastic day was had by all!  Huge thanks go to our competition winners Declan and Gina, a sounder couple you are unlikely to meet! Mondello Park who went above and beyond to put on an experience that won't be forgotten in a hurry, Aron Smith for frightening the living daylights out of us and JOE.ie for spreading the word. Fingers crossed we'll be back with another competition in the near future! Watch this space

Wicklow Warriors Win in Mondello Stunner

The atmosphere was electric for this second visit to the Co. Kildare track for the second time this year. With a packed venue and all eyes on them, the Micksgarage.com Formula Sheane Championship certainly didn’t buckle under the pressure; instead they put on what was renowned by Motorsport Ireland as the racing of the weekend. The series has been credited with that honour at every track it has visited this year and long may it continue. Testing on Friday had its victims, Chris McCabe succumbed to engine woes early in the morning but he and his crew worked relentlessly to change the engine and get the car back and race ready for qualifying the next day. The track its self was very uncharacteristically slippy some suggesting that it was from the drift cars the week before but that meant that every single car was on the exact same pace and no one driver was able to bang in super quick lap to set the pace, every session bringing with it a different pace.

 Qualifying
The drivers arrived to a wet and changeable track on Saturday morning with many spending it contemplating what wet set-up they would run if it didn’t dry out by the time qualifying started. Luckily enough several other classes were out beforehand to clear a nice dry line which meant that the drivers could push on and go for that one quick lap to secure pole. All the cars lined up in assembly ready to go out with all eyes on the sky praying it would stay dry the whole way through. Qualifying being the fiery devil she is took no prisoners right from the start in the form of driveshaft failure for Gary Corcoran who didn’t manage to get a single lap time in sealing is fate to the back of the grid for both races. Usual business resumed for the battle for pole between the top in the championship, Dave Parks setting the pace early on before suspension failure brought is qualifying to an end and a red flag to the session. With Parks car removed the rest of the grid positions were battled out in the same manner we know and come to expect from these guys. Sheane snatching the pole position only for a second before the Master Hearty snatched it off him. Allen then banged in a lap to put Sheane to 3rdwith Hogg in 4th. Sheane then put in a lap that couldn’t be measured with a microscope, only .015 of a second behind Hearty. Hearty went on to set an even quicker lap time and extend the gap slightly with Hogg snatching 3rd of Allen. Parks early pole time was good enough to see him take 5th on the grid with Kearney, Paul McLoughlin, Newcomer to the class Sean Doyle only managing 8th after struggling with set-up, Linnane and Carr rounding out the top 10. True to form, Sheane blasted in a last ditch pole lap and reclaimed the top spot on the grid from Hearty.

 Race One.
18 cars lined up in assembly for the first race of the weekend for the series, all looking fantastically turned out and ready to race. The cars all had a quick green flag lap to find out where the grip was on the ever changing track conditions. The packed grid all took their positions, the rev’s raised in deafening anticipation of the lights going out and as they did Keith Hogg, from the second row of the grid took off like a bullet out of a gun and picked of Hearty and Sheane to lead into the first corner. A fantastic start from Doyle put him into the action fast and onto the back of Allen’s gearbox as they turned out into the country, simple driving around cars on the outside to slot in behind the leading pack. Around the cars came all noses to tail like they were stuck together Hogg leading from Sheane, Hearty, Allen and Doyle who was quickly lining up Allen with his eyes on Hearty. The rest of the field thundered through a few cars missing in first lap incidents and all scrambling for places. Gary Corcoran coming from the back of the grid was already inside the top ten, an absolutely incredible first lap by the County Wicklow man. Doyle moved up to 3rd after making the moves on Allen and Hearty and the battle for the lead changed as Sheane snatched it away from Hogg. Sheane got the head down and set about building his lead from the chasing pack. Parks managed to take Allen for a few laps before Allen re-claimed the 4th position from him. Doyle set his sights on Hogg and more ultimately Sheane in 1st but he had forgotten one thing the man who he had just overtaken, Hearty who threw every year of his experience at Doyle to take the place back. That battle raged on for a few laps with both touching at nearly every corner of the track which ended in the only way it could like that, Doyle’s throttle sticking open coming into the esses saw him drive into the back of Hearty and push him around the corner causing both terminal damage that saw them both retire a few laps later. That promoted Allen and Parks to 3rd and 4th positions which would soon be 2nd and 3rd as Hogg developed an engine problem that he tried to nurse home in the effort to grab some points but would eventually retire a lap from the end. Battles raged all the way through the field and other cars ran into problems in battle which promoted Paul McLoughlin up into 4th with drive of the day driver Gary Corcoran driver bringing his car home in 5th. The 2nd Micksgarage.com car was brought home in 6th spot in the hands of guest driver Michael Sweeney. Brendan Carr and Gilbert Clancy managed to keep their noses clean and avoid all the trouble to work their way through the field. That’s how the race ended, Kevin Sheane, Robbie Allen and Dave Parks the big winners in points for the battle for the championship. This one race has blown the whole championship open and made it a 5-way battle at the top as they all closed in on Hearty. After all that excitement the crews and supporters peeled themselves away from the track to which they had been glued to congratulate the podium winners up in the scrutiny bay. That was all the action for the Saturday, race wise anyways and good few teams having to work on into the evening carrying out repairs for the race on Sunday.

 Race Two
Sunday morning, and as the drivers, crews, families and supporters arrived they were greeted by a very overcast Mondello Park but again most importantly it was dry which set the race up to be as fast paced and action packed as the day before was. A few slight changes in grid positions for the start, the biggest being Hearty taking the pole position spot from Sheane. The tension was high and everyone was on tender hooks as the cars rolled up to the grid for the start. The lights went out and another blistering start by Doyle off the line, Sheane got the drop on Hearty as they approached the first corner. Hearty seemed to have a problem initially as Hogg got the overtake finished before turn in, Allen took avoiding action to the left of Hearty, Doyle to the right and out over the pit line to slot in in-behind Hogg for the corner. As they went out into the country for the first time Hogg did everything in his power to hold off Doyle who looked everywhere for a way around but couldn’t. Sheane scrambled to get the head down and try pull away whilst the others squabbled over the positions. Doyle threw it up the inside of Hogg coming into the last corner and made it stick; now he set his sights on Sheane. Across the line Sheane took the defensive line into turn one but again Doyle drove out onto the pit lane and around Sheane to take the lead. That was 7th to 1st in 8 corners…not bad for only his 3rd race in the series. Allen tried to make a move on the outside of Hogg going into turn one which resulted in him running out of track and that was the end of his days racing. That off brought out the safety car, not exactly something you see every day in Irish Circuit racing but was needed none the less as Allen’s Car was in a dangerous position. The Safety car gathered the cars up and they awaited the green light to go racing again. The midfield battles were sensational too, Gary Corcoran and Sean Hynes Slicing their way up the grid from the back with Clancy, Sweeney and Carr all swapping positions anywhere they could. On the restart Doyle lead the train of cars across the line into the first corner. Doyle set about trying to pull a gap but Sheane and Hogg had set themselves up right under Doyle’s rear wing where they stayed throughout the rest of the race never letting him more than a car length away. The Chequered Flag dropped and Doyle took the win from Sheane in 2nd and Hogg in 3rd. Brian Hearty was in 4th just in front Parks who claimed 5th from Mayo man Sean Hynes in 6th. Corcoran with another incredible drive finished 7th from the back of the grid. Paul McLoughin slotted in 8th John Linnane made it home in 9th after a great drive from him in his immaculate machine. Brendan Carr rounds out the top 10 positions.

And that was it rounds 7 & 8 were done and dusted and the series was leaving the track with 2 more winners this year which brings it to 5 different winners from 8 rounds, that alone goes to show how close this class is in terms of pace and quality. The Second race on the Sunday was credited as being the best race of the weekend which is another accolade that the series can take, Formula Sheane has now been the best racing at each of the 4 race weekends it has attended this year so far and with the championship after been blown wide open with those results you can be sure that they will take that title at the next 2 in Kirkistown and Mondello Park. As Doyle was not involved in the Main Micksgarage.com Formula Sheane Championship he will not be awarded points for the win, Everyone below Doyle will be bumped up a place in the final race positions for points meaning, Sheane takes full points for race 2, Hogg takes 2nd and Hearty moves up to 3rd to round out the podium positions and likewise throughout the rest of the field.

Formula Sheane would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Drivers, the Crews, the Marshalls, the Organisers, the Families and the Fans of the Series. Without any of you none of the class would be possible and we love putting on the show for you. Everyone certainly felt the support this weekend. The Micksgarage.com Formula Sheane championship proving time and again (and at every race circuit this year!) why it is Ireland’s Premier Racing Series. You will not find a higher calibre racing in Ireland. There’s a long break now until round 9 but let it Roll on and let these guys continue in the fight for the Honours in Irelands Top Tier racing series!!!

Challenging Croft for Smith and Team BMR

Coming off the back of an impressive lights to flag victory in race three at Oulton Park, confidence was at an all time high in Árón Smith’s side of the Team BMR garage coming to Croft. The Yorkshire venue had been the base for the majority of the team’s pre-season testing and as a result the aim was very much to return to the podium before the championship’s summer break.

After a solid morning Free Practice, Qualifying had been going to plan for Dublin based Driver Árón Smith. However as the session was drawing to a close, Smith had set the seventh best time which was then disallowed by the Stewards for breaching the controversial new for 2014 track limits rule. Smith set about improving on the time but cruelly the session was cut short with a red flag putting the MicksGarage.com supported driver in 11th for Sunday’s opening race.

Opting to save his Dunlop Soft Tyres for race three, Smith started race one like many others on the hard type option. A good start off the line put Smith into the mix at the first corner. However some customary pushing and bumping dropped him one place to 12thwhere he remained for the early part of the race. As he closed in on Dave Newsham for 11th, heavy contact from Fabrizio Giovanardi sent the Restart Energy driver wide and down the order to 15th. Clearly carrying damage from the impact, Smith limped his car around the track for the remainder of the race to try and save his weekend and secure a decent starting position for race two. At the flag, Árón was rewarded with 23rd for his efforts to get the car home.

Once again the Team BMR crew worked miracles on the car to repair what turned out to be quite a significant amount of damage from the contact with Giovanardi in race one. However a short turnaround window between races meant that only the most significant damage could be repaired in an effort to get the car out for race two. Hoping to reward their efforts, Smith did his best to carry his ailing Volkswagen Passat CC up the order from a starting position of 23rd. By the end of the race, Árón crossed the finish line in 15th place which would also become his starting position for the final race of the weekend.
With a fully fighting fit Volkswagen Passat CC for the final race of the day, Smith was focused on making his way quickly up the order. An opening lap clash at the head of the field brought out the Safety Car for the first three laps before racing got back underway on lap four. By now Árón had promoted his MicksGarage.com supported Passat up to tenth and was keen to continue up the order. Going onto the final lap of the race, now hot on the heels of Adam Morgan for sixth, Smith ran ever so slightly wide at the last chicane dropping him back to ninth position where he would remain to the flag. Proof that the Team BMR Volkswagen was capable of so much more was found in the fact that Árón set the outright fastest lap of the race during race three.

Árón Smith - #40 Chrome Edition Restart Racing Volkswagen Passat CC:
“Well I think it’s fair to say that race one really made it difficult for any podium return this weekend. Having to carry some of that damage into race two really hurt any potential to make our way back up the order. Race three was much more representative of our true pace setting the outright fastest lap, which is a real shame as the team did a fantastic job again this weekend and that pace should have had us back on the podium. But we’ve got the mid-season break now to reflect on the first half of our season and we’ll be back at Snetterton ready to return to the podium!”

Micksgarage.com Formula Sheane Championship, Rounds 3 & 4: Bishopscourt

Rounds 3 & 4 of the Micksgarage.com Formula Sheane Championship traveled to Bishopscourt race circuit in N. Ireland this weekend.

Race 1:
Robbie Allen made a lightning start to snatch the lead from the pole position man Kevin Sheane, who got tangled up in a first corner incident which resulted in a red flag. Allen made an even better getaway at the restart leaving Brian Hearty, Keith Hogg and Dave Parks to battle it out for 2nd. Hearty ended up the victor of the battle for 2nd and Hogg took the final podium position.

Race 2:
Kevin Sheane had to concede pole position and was forced to start from the back of the grid after changing over to the spare MicksGarage.com car. The lights went out and straight from the off a 5 way battle between Allen, Hearty, Hogg, Parks and O’Connor began for the Lead. The pack swapped and changed places on nearly every corner with cars all trying to outbrake each other in what was described as the race of the weekend at the N. Ireland circuit. Dave Parks managed to grab the lead from a very quick and determined Hogg who threw everything he had into a last ditch effort to regain 1st but unfortunately for him it didn't work and he dropped to 4th. This allowed Park’s Micksgarage.com machine to take a much deserved first win of the season, with Hearty and Allen Claiming the other Podium positions.

Smith finishes challenging Thruxton weekend with top ten result

Off the back of a consistent weekend at Donington Park that promoted Árón Smith to ninth in the drivers championship, the Irishman was looking forward to a stronger showing at the high-speed Thruxton Circuit for rounds seven, eight and nine of the 2014 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

However Smith’s weekend got off to a difficult start as he struggled with the balance of his Volkswagen Passat CC in Free Practice One. Cruelly Árón would end the session with heavy damage after running wide at the first corner – Allard, making contact with the barriers.

After a superb effort from the Team BMR crew lead by Alan Cole, Smith was able to make it out on track for the final five minutes of the afternoon’s qualifying session to complete three shakedown laps to check the car over and allow him to start from the back of the grid for race one.

Despite Saturday’s misfortunes, Smith was looking determined going into race one and with the car’s known dry weather speed, was optimistic about making his way up the order. A strong start to the race promoted the MicksGarage.com supported driver to 25th by end of the opening lap. Continuing to work his way up the order, Árón had now managed to get up to 16th position by lap 13 before he ran slightly wide onto the grass coming out of the fast Church corner filling his radiator with grass, forcing him to pit to clear the blockage. Despite this however, Smith took the chequered flag in 22nd position, which would also be his starting position for race two.

Once again, Smith was fast out of the blocks in race two and avoiding any opening lap dramas, found himself in 19th place as he started lap two. Continuing to work his way up the order, Smith was just behind Nick Foster and Rob Austin in 16th coming into Church before contact between the pair just ahead resulted in both of them running off the track. Árón made his way past the incident before the race was then ended with a red flag and Smith was eventually classified 14th in the final result.

With Rob Austin starting under appeal after his race two exclusion, Árón Smith started the final race of the weekend in 15th and was keen to finish his weekend with a strong result. Once again Smith got a good start and by lap six was up to 11th as the safety car was deployed to clear the stricken Proton of Ollie Jackson. With the pack nicely bunched up, this gave Árón another chance to continue up the order when the race got back under way on lap ten. Passing Sam Tordoff, Adam Morgan was next on his shopping list as the Safety car was again deployed, this time to aid the recovery of Simon Belcher. As the race got back under way, Smith drifted his Passat past Morgan at Goodwood to move into ninth. In the closing stages of the race, Smith benefited from a tussle between Matt Neal and Rob Collard to move up to seventh before taking the chequered flag.

Speaking after the race, an upbeat Árón reflected on a challenging weekend: “This weekend certainly didn’t get off to an ideal start. However the team did an amazing job to get the car out in qualifying, as there was quite a lot of damage from free practice. Race one was obviously disappointing as we had got up to a really good position but race two and especially race three were much better. We’ve got a nice break now to chill out and look forward to Oulton Park!”

How To Save €1000 Per Year On Fuel.....According to Ford

A new Ford-sponsored survey of 5,700 people across Europe shows that four simple fuel-saving tricks could stop drivers wasting up to €1,000 a year on fuel. Removing excess weight from inside the car, taking off the roof box, shopping around for fuel, and optimising tyre pressure – could together cut annual fuel bills by 33%

Video: the four hidden ways that motorists waste money:

Ford’s findings show that 76% of drivers do not regularly check tyres, 38% never remove roof storage, 18% never shop around, and 17% always leave extra items in the car. Most drivers also increase fuel consumption by breaking speed limits and many never choose the most economical route for a journey. Around half of drivers add to their bill by impulse shopping at filling stations

The four simple tricks that could help drivers save as much as 33 per cent on fuel are: Removing the roof-top cargo box (20%) Shopping around for fuel (7%) Checking and optimising tyre pressures every month (4 %) Removing excess weight from inside the car (2%)

The poll also revealed further opportunities to cut fuel consumption – 71% of drivers admit breaking speed limits, 42% never choose the most economical route, 39% drive aggressively, and 14% leave the air conditioning on all the time.

The survey found that with people on average spending €3,011 on fuel each year, bills could be cut by €994. Apparently Italian drivers are the most likely to leave unnecessary items in their car (23%), and are also the most likely to leave roof storage equipment in place (43%). Less than half Italians polled said they would ever choose the most economical route (49%). German drivers are the most likely to speed (89%) and drive aggressively (57%). French drivers are the least likely to make a monthly tyre pressure check (18%). Spanish drivers are most likely to always leave the air conditioning system on (19%), and more than a quarter of U.K. drivers never shop around for fuel (26%). The survey also revealed that after filling up 45% of people also add to their spending at the pumps by impulse buying other items. German drivers were the most likely to buy something additional (63%), while Italian men were the most likely also to buy a coffee (28%), and U.K. women the most likely also to buy a bar of chocolate (19%).
